Post-doc Position at UC Santa Barbara

Open Postdoctoral Position

Research groups of M. Scott Shell and L. Gary Leal
Department of Chemical Engineering
University of California Santa Barbara

We are seeking to hire an outstanding candidate for a postdoctoral research position in the area of multiscale modeling. The project involves the development and application of novel hybrid molecular-continuum simulation techniques, in which mesoscale/macroscale numerical solutions of the continuum transport equations are coupled to molecular dynamics simulations in spatial domains where fluids meet interfaces. The postdoc will build on novel approaches developed jointly in the Leal and Shell groups over the past few years to develop a fundamental understanding in two primary problems of interest: (1) transport contributions to the stability of surface nanobubbles that form on hydrophobic substrates immersed in water, and (2) the friction and interactions between colloidal particles in dense suspensions. The postdoc will have the opportunity to work in the highly collaborative environment at UCSB, in particular among an outstanding number of other theorists and computational scientists. The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal for an additional year pending available funding and good progress (e.g., as evidenced by publications, manuscripts, and/or assisted proposals).

Qualifications. Candidates should have earned a doctorate in chemical engineering, physical chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering, or in a related interdisciplinary field. The candidate should have a strong background in fluids, hydrodynamics, and transport (theory and/or simulation) as well as computational methods and programming (Python and C, C++, or Fortran). The ideal candidate would also have experience in molecular modeling (e.g., molecular dynamics) and statistical mechanics & thermodynamics. Experience in algorithms development will provide a distinct advantage. We seek a candidate who works well independently and on a team, and who has excellent interpersonal skills, and who communicates technical ideas well in both written and oral settings.

Application process. Applicants should provide a detailed curriculum vitae, including the names and contact information of three potential references. Materials should be submitted electronically to Prof. M. Scott Shell at shell@engineering.ucsb.edu. Evaluation of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. UCSB is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service.
