LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ PROFESSOR (3 POSTS)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The University of Pretoria wishes to appoint academic staff members in available positions to enhance the current research and teaching capacity in the Department of Chemical Engineering and to position the Department as international leader. Qualifying candidates with suitable expertise and experience are sought in the following research focus areas of the Department: Process Design, Modelling, Optimisation & Control; Advanced Materials, Polymers & Product Development; Water Utilisation & Environmental Engineering; Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology & Bioprocessing. The positions will be closely associated with multidisciplinary research related to Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems. The positions may range from Lecturer to Professor, depending on the qualifications and background of the candidates.

The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for: ● Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching ● Supervision of undergraduate final year students in Design and Project ● Supervision of postgraduate Master’s and Doctoral students ● Conduct research in a highly productive manner, to expand existing research programmes, to publish research articles in the foremost internationally accredited journals ● Acquire research funding outside the University ● Assigned departmental duties (e.g. of an administrative nature) ● The broadening of expertise via consultancy to industry

• Teaching (Rt115/04 Appendix 2): Undergraduate teaching in Chemical Engineering and Post-graduate teaching in the programme focus research areas of the Department. Assigned departmental duties (e.g. of an administrative nature).
• Research (Rt115/04 Appendix 3):
Continuous research outputs in a productive manner within the stated research focus areas is essential Expand existing/initiate new research programmes, raise and manage additional funding from national and international funding agencies and industry to support the activities of the relevant focus group Publish research articles in international accredited journals Supervision of postgraduate Master’s and Doctoral students

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer
• A BEng/BSc(Eng)-degree in Chemical Engineering from a University of which the undergraduate programme is recognised by the Washington Accord or is recognised
by ECSA to be substantially equivalent;
• A Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering that follows on the qualification as described in the previous point;
• The topic of the Master’s degree and publications should be aligned to one of the research foci in the Department;

Senior Lecturer
• A BEng/BSc(Eng)-degree in Chemical Engineering from a University of which the undergraduate programme is recognised by the Washington Accord or is recognised
by ECSA to be substantially equivalent;
• A PhD-degree in Engineering with specialisation in one of the stated focus areas of the Department;
• A proven research record of research supported by publications in peer reviewed journals;
• Registration or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng.).

Associate Professor
• A BEng/BSc(Eng)-degree in Chemical Engineering from a University of which the undergraduate programme is recognised by the Washington Accord or is recognised
by ECSA to be substantially equivalent;
• A PhD-degree in Engineering with specialisation in one of the stated focus areas of the Department;
• An established record of research supported by publications in accredited peer reviewed journals, plus
• National academic status in the relevant discipline;
• National recognition as a researcher;
• Experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching;
• Experience in the successful graduation of Master’s candidates;
• Registration or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng.).

Professor
• A BEng/BSc(Eng)-degree in Chemical Engineering from a University of which the undergraduate programme is recognised by the Washington Accord or is recognised
by ECSA to be substantially equivalent;
• A PhD-degree in Engineering with specialisation in one of the stated focus areas of the Department;
• A proven record of research supported by publications in accredited peer reviewed journals,
• International academic status in the relevant discipline;
• International recognition as a researcher;
• Experience in the successful graduation of Masters and PhD candidates;
• Registration or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng.).

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES): – For all levels:
• Good time management skills;
• Industrial experience in the stated area of required expertise;
• Appropriate language and communication skills.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
• A record of previous under- and postgraduate teaching experience as well as supervision of masters and doctoral students;
• Registered PrEng with ECSA;
• Industrial experience in the stated areas
• Preference will be given to candidates from under-represented designated groups.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
